Horse racing fans
from around the world will remember the 2006
Kentucky Derby as Barbaro's last great hurrah.
It was a beautiful win for Lael Stable's three-year-old
horse. Although stumbling a bit right out of
the gates, Barbaro quickly regained his footing
at the top of the stretch and rocketed past
the entire field to post an impressive 6 ½-length
victory over second-place winner Bluegrass
Cat and claim the $2 million-dollar prize.
The 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby was
jockey Edgar Prado's first and final Derby victory
atop Barbaro. The courageous colt, owned by Roy
and Gretchen Jackson, battled through eight months
of health complications related to a fall he
took at the start of the Preakness Stakes on
May 20, 2006 and was euthanized on January 29,
2007.
Barbaro's legend, however, lives on.
Before a crowd of 157,536, the second largest
attendance figure in the history of the race,
Barbaro's lead would go down as the largest since
Assault scored a 6-length win in 1946. The Classic
race also set a new North American record for
wagering on a single race, breaking the total
collected at the 2005 Derby (which was the first
race in North America to attract betting of more
than $100 million).

History of the Kentucky Derby
The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17,
1875, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky
and is the oldest consecutively held thoroughbred
race in America. The first jewel of the Triple
Crown, which includes the Belmont Stakes and
the Preakness Stakes, the Kentucky Derby is a
high stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred
horses. The fastest Kentucky Derby was run by
Secretariat, who covered the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59
2/5.
Known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" for
the approximate amount of time it takes all horses
to cross the finish line, the Kentucky Derby
is now held annually on the first Saturday in
May and draws close to 155,000 hat wearing, mint
julep drinking, fried chicken eating horse racing
fans to its legendary stands and infield.

The Kentucky Derby Trophy
Atop the handcrafted Kentucky
Derby trophy sits an 18-karat gold horse and
rider, and its horseshoe shaped handles feature
both ends pointing up. It is believed that if
the horseshoe is turned down all the luc k will
run out. Measuring 22 inches tall and weighing
56 ounces (excluding its jade base) the Kentucky
Derby trophy is believed to be the only solid
gold trophy that is annually awarded to the winner
of a major American sporting event.
